To Eat or Not To Eat
05/15/2008 - By Scoopster (Pet Butler Mascot) Dear Scoopster,
I am curious about my dog’s behavior and I am a little embarrassed by it also. She has a habit of eating her poop. Is this a common problem and is there anything I can do to stop this behavior?
Desiring to get closer to my pooch,
Tanya F., Lexington
Dear Desiring to Get Closer,
As anyone who loves their pet, you do not want to be lacking in hugs & kisses or the occasional good tongue bath from us dogs, but poop breath is a good reason to keep your distance.
Unfortunately, this is not an abnormal behavior among my canine brethren, but it is a correctable behavior. Humans have a term, “This tastes like crap!” For some dogs, crap is not necessarily a bad taste. It’s like when you first tried coffee. I have heard owners say it is an acquired taste. Especially, the coffee that is made out of coffee beans found in cat stool. I prefer the entire cat myself, but I digress. A term you have for our behavior is called Coprophagia. We consider it recycling, being more echo friendly and it does not cost $10.00 a cup like some coffee.
Since we both seem to find our behaviors a little embarrassing, I have the following suggestion: Since you cannot raise prices or tax dog poop in order sway our behavior, humans need to help their dog’s biscuits taste even crappier. I know many of you are thinking, “This is not possible!” but it is. It is kind of like when you try to break your child from sucking their thumb. You apply a nasty flavor to the thumb and “voila!” no thumb sucking.
Just feed your bad breathed companion a coprophagia treatment tablet slipped in to a treat. Doo this for 2 weeks and when FiFi sees her feces, she will no longer drool over her stool.
Now to celebrate I propose filling a cat with coffee beans and slow roasting it over an open pit.
