Seton Catholic students raise money for hungry horses

Lexington, KY, May 15, 2008 – First grade students at the Seton Catholic School are fundraising to help hungry horses. All funds raised by the children will be donated to the Kentucky Horse Council SoHo (Save Our Horses) fund.
At a recent kickoff event the students met Kentucky Horse Council Executive Director, Ginny Grulke and her horse Mandy to learn about the problem of starving horses in Kentucky. The children were able to see and touch Mandy in an effort to understand the needs of horses. There was a clear contrast between the health and bloom of Mandy and the images of hungry horses on the local evening news.
This is one of many service learning projects that students have been involved with throughout the year at the Lexington based Catholic school. The class selects an organization and then they begin the collection process. The students voluntarily give their own money (often change and small bills). At the end of the collection time the money is then donated to the charitable organization. At least two parents of the Seton school students have committed to matching the funds that the first grade class raises for SoHo.
“This is a great opportunity to not only teach children about giving back to the community but also to teach them about taking care of those that cannot care for themselves,” commented Madelyn Millard, Board President. “And owning a horse includes making a commitment to caring for a living being that cannot provide for itself.”
The SoHo fund continues to provide feed and veterinary care for abused and neglected horses throughout Kentucky. SoHo has fed 242 horses in 18 counties throughout the state since February. Money from the fund also supports Equine Abuse and Investigation training, grants to non-profit equine rescue groups, and other horse heath and welfare programming.
