Adopt A Shelter Cat Month at the Lexington Humane Society

Adopt a Cat - $49, Adopt a Kitten - $79, Adopt Love - Priceless
The American Society of Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has designated the month of June as “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.” ASPCA and the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) are urging people to spend this month contributing to the welfare of all cats through adopting, fostering, volunteering, educating or donating.
Warmer months bring a rush of cats and kittens to animal shelters throughout the country. As the largest open-door shelter in Central Kentucky, LHS faces an increasing number of cats and kittens throughout the summer months. “We currently have nearly 100 cats and kittens up for adoption and are looking to find forever homes for these feline friends.” These staggering numbers make it disappointing to hear that only 18% of owned cats were actually adopted from a shelter and that less than 5% of the population has ever visited their local animal shelter.
Sadly, pet overpopulation is the most important issue facing pets today, with an estimated five to six million dogs and cats annually entering into shelters nationwide.
Below are tips from the Lexington Humane Society on how you can show your support and get involved during “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month”:
• Adopt a cat or kitten at LHS!
During the month of June cats are abundant and the LHS Adoptions Specialists are ready to assist you in finding the perfect addition to your family. Unfortunately, statistics show that less than 20% of animals entering into homes actually came from an animal shelter. LHS is full of friendly felines ready to move into loving, forever homes. There is more invested in an LHS adoptable animal than the actual adoption price. LHS adoption includes a microchip, spay/neuter surgery, first round of vaccinations, mild de-worming, feline leukemia test, flea treatment, free 30 day pet medical insurance, free 4lb. bag of Science Diet food, free office visit and a free grooming visit.
• Foster a furry friend!
The purpose of the LHS foster care program is to provide temporary care for animals that are not yet adoptable due to age, health, or socialization level. Many cats or kittens need additional TLC before they are ready to go up for adoption. From time to time, LHS has up to 200 animals in foster care. Foster care parents are part of the amazing transformation of an animal in need into a forever companion!
• Be a responsible cat owner!
The problem of cat overpopulation has a simple and clear solution: always spay or neuter! Statistics show that one female cat and her offspring can produce 11,606,077 cats in 9 years! By having your pets “fixed,” you are preventing more unwanted kittens from joining the rising overpopulation and from having an uncertain future. By spaying or neutering your pets, you are part of the solution.
• Get involved!
Numerous volunteer opportunities allow one to directly increase the happiness of a cat’s life. From assisting with humane education programs to exercising adoptable animals, LHS can find the perfect position for any volunteer. LHS is always in need of volunteers!
• Donate!
LHS spends approximately $400 on every animal adopted. No gift is too small! Whether it is the gift of time, money, or love; give to your local shelter and in turn you’ll be providing shelter animals the chance of a forever home.
Keep cats in mind this month and help spread the word to “make adoption your first option”. Each person that adopts a cat or kitten from LHS today through June 30th is registered for a drawing that will provide one lucky winner with Science Diet cat food for a year!
